Focus on GDP-Tax Ratio, Not Individual Burdens

Published: 01 Mar 2026, 05:25 am

Following a high-level strategic meeting with departmental heads at the Sylhet Circuit House on Saturday, 28 February 2026, members of the interim cabinet outlined a comprehensive roadmap for economic stability and regional development. Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir sought to clarify recent fiscal anxieties, noting that Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is prioritising the enhancement of the tax-to-GDP ratio rather than imposing additional burdens on individual taxpayers.

Economic Diplomacy and Market Stability

The Commerce Minister revealed that Bangladesh has formally reached out to the European Union to initiate discussions regarding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This move is seen as a vital step in securing the nation's post-LDC graduation future. Addressing domestic concerns, the Minister assured the public that commodity prices would remain stable throughout the remainder of Ramadan and the subsequent months.

Despite a "global downturn" attributed to aggressive American tariff policies, the Minister emphasised that the government is committed to ensuring timely wage payments for labourers, allowing the workforce to celebrate the upcoming Eid festivities with financial security.

Infrastructure and the Anti-Corruption Drive

Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie highlighted the Prime Minister’s directive to prioritise "public-interest projects." In the Sylhet region, this translates to urgent interventions in flood defences, river erosion mitigation, and the construction of sustainable embankments in the Haor wetlands.

"The previous administration’s systemic corruption has left us with a formidable challenge," Minister Annie remarked. "We are committed to delivering public works that are entirely free from the graft that previously crippled our development."

Labour Markets and Global Outreach

Expatriates' Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury provided an optimistic update on the international labour front. The government is actively negotiating to reopen and expand stagnant labour markets in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and various Middle Eastern territories to bolster remittance inflows.

A Transition Toward Transparency

The collective briefing underscored a shift toward a more transparent, data-driven governance model. By focusing on structural tax reforms rather than individual hikes, the administration aims to stimulate growth while cleansing the procurement process of historical irregularities. The ministers collectively reiterated that the "people's mandate" would be honoured through visible improvements in both the economy and infrastructure.
