Escalating hostilities in the Middle East have severely disrupted regional air travel, leaving thousands of passengers stranded — among them Bangladesh’s veteran cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim. The deterioration in security follows Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and subsequent retaliatory threats, prompting widespread airspace restrictions across several countries.
Airlines have moved swiftly to suspend or reroute services amid fears of missile activity and the potential targeting of civilian air corridors. Bangladesh’s national flag carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, announced a temporary suspension of all flights to Middle Eastern destinations, citing passenger safety as its foremost priority. A number of leading international carriers, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, have similarly cancelled services or altered flight paths to avoid high-risk zones.
Rahim, the experienced wicketkeeper-batsman of the Bangladesh national cricket team, had travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. After completing the pilgrimage in Mecca, he was scheduled to return to Dhaka via Dubai. However, his Emirates flight EK0806, departing from King Abdulaziz International Airport, was forced to turn back shortly after take-off due to the rapidly evolving security situation.
In a statement posted on his verified social media account, Rahim explained that the aircraft had initially departed for Dubai but was recalled to Jeddah as regional airspace closures intensified. He noted that thousands of passengers are now waiting at the airport, uncertain about when commercial operations will resume. Expressing concern yet maintaining faith, he asked supporters to keep stranded travellers in their prayers.
The crisis has extended beyond Saudi Arabia. Authorities in Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon have temporarily closed portions of their airspace amid fears of further retaliatory missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Aviation analysts observe that even limited military escalation can have sweeping implications for civilian aviation, as airlines must avoid not only active conflict zones but also adjacent air corridors deemed vulnerable.
Below is a summary of the current aviation disruptions affecting the region:
| Country/Area | Status of Airspace/Flights | Impact on Travellers |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | Flights disrupted; diversions ongoing | Thousands stranded in Jeddah |
| United Arab Emirates | Select rerouting and cancellations | Delays and rescheduling |
| Qatar | Heightened security; partial rerouting | Limited disruptions |
| Jordan | Temporary airspace restrictions | Suspended overflights |
| Iraq & Lebanon | Airspace closures in effect | Major route diversions |
Aviation authorities are closely monitoring developments, but no clear timeline has yet been provided for the restoration of full services. For Bangladeshi nationals stranded abroad, diplomatic missions are reportedly coordinating with airlines to explore contingency arrangements.
For now, Rahim and countless others remain in limbo — a stark reminder of how swiftly geopolitical tensions can ripple into the lives of ordinary travellers.
