In Lalmonirhat, a district court has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to a fugitive in a case under the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.

On Wednesday, 18 February, the District and Sessions Judge of Lalmonirhat, Md. Haidar Ali, delivered the verdict, ruling against the accused, Md. Aminur Rahman, a resident of Baraipara (Kanipara) village in Hatibandha Upazila. The court found him guilty under Section 36(1), Schedule 13(g) of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.

In addition to life imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of BDT 10,000, stating that failure to pay would result in an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment. The verdict specifies that the sentence will become effective from the date of surrender or arrest of the fugitive. Any time spent in pre-trial detention will be counted towards the sentence.

Incident Details

According to court documents, on 25 November 2019 at 12:25 am, Sub-Inspector Abu Bakker Siddique of Hatibandha Police, accompanied by his team, conducted a special operation. The fugitive attempted to flee upon noticing the police presence but was apprehended. A quantity of illicit phensedyl was recovered from his possession.

Following the recovery, a case was filed with Hatibandha Police Station, and during the judicial proceedings, the court found the evidence presented by the prosecution to be conclusive, leading to the life sentence.

Court Directives

The court directed that all seized contraband be taken into the custody of the state and destroyed in accordance with legal procedures. Relevant authorities have been instructed to submit a compliance report within 30 days.

Prosecution Public Prosecutor Humayun Reza Swapon stated that the court had deemed the evidence beyond reasonable doubt, justifying the verdict. He added that the fugitive’s life sentence will commence from the day of surrender or arrest.

This verdict serves as a strong warning to drug traffickers, reinforcing the judiciary’s commitment to curbing narcotics distribution across Lalmonirhat and the surrounding districts. Law enforcement officials hope the ruling will act as a deterrent to similar criminal activities in the region.
