Three suspected drug traffickers have been arrested in two separate anti-narcotics operations conducted by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-12) in Bogura district. The raids, carried out on Wednesday (18 February), resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of contraband, including 60 bottles of “Fairdeal” cough syrup, two bottles of “Eskaf”, and 29 kilograms of cannabis.

According to RAB officials, the first operation was conducted at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the Sonka area of Bhabanipur ইউনিয়ন, under Sherpur upazila of Bogura. Acting on confidential intelligence, an оператив team from the Crime Prevention Special Company (CPSC) of RAB-12 intercepted a Dinajpur-to-Dhaka passenger bus near the Nabil Highway Restaurant Jame Mosque.

During a search of the vehicle, officers apprehended Md Mamunur Rashid (45), a resident of West Ramnagar, Kotwali থানায়, Dinajpur district. He was found in possession of 60 bottles of the codeine-based cough syrup “Fairdeal” and two bottles of “Eskaf”, both commonly abused as intoxicants. Authorities allege that the suspect was transporting the substances for distribution and sale.

Earlier that morning, at approximately 6:40 a.m., a second operation was conducted on the Dhaka–Rangpur highway near the Signature Filling Station in Hamchapur village, Shahbandegi ইউনিয়ন, also within Sherpur থানার jurisdiction. RAB personnel stopped a Cumilla-to-Thakurgaon passenger bus following intelligence reports of drug trafficking.

Two individuals — Md Suman Mia (28) of Bhatra Jangalpur, Cumilla Sadar South, and Md Saiful Islam (27) of Shotipara, Nilphamari — were arrested after officers recovered 29 kilograms of cannabis from their possession. Investigators also seized two basic mobile handsets and two SIM cards believed to have been used in coordinating the illicit trade.

RAB officials stated that the operations were conducted under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer of RAB-12, with logistical support from the Intelligence Wing at RAB Headquarters. The arrested individuals have been handed over to Sherpur Police Station in Bogura for further legal proceedings under the Narcotics Control Act.

Law enforcement authorities reaffirmed their commitment to curbing the flow of illegal narcotics along major highway routes, which are often exploited by traffickers to move drugs between districts. Bogura, situated on key northern transport corridors, has in recent years witnessed intensified anti-drug surveillance operations.

Officials emphasised that such intelligence-led drives will continue as part of a broader nationwide campaign to dismantle drug distribution networks and safeguard communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.
