Bangladesh national cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim, who had travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, found himself unexpectedly stranded at Jeddah’s airport on Saturday amid escalating regional tensions. He was originally scheduled to return home the same day.
Mushfiq had boarded an Emirates Airlines flight bound for Dubai. However, due to heightened security risks stemming from the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, the aircraft was forced to return to Jeddah. This sudden rerouting left Mushfiqur, along with thousands of other passengers, temporarily stranded at the airport.
Speaking to the media, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, assured the public of Mushfiqur’s safety. “I am personally monitoring the situation. I have spoken to Mushfiqur, and we have also coordinated with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. We are hopeful that he will be able to return to Bangladesh on a special flight tomorrow morning. So far, he is safe and in good health,” the minister stated.
Mushfiqur himself had updated fans on social media about the situation. He wrote:
“Assalamu Alaikum everyone. A few days ago, I arrived in Makkah for Umrah. Alhamdulillah, I have completed my pilgrimage. Today, I was returning to Bangladesh via Dubai on Emirates Flight EK 0806. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, all flights have been redirected back to Jeddah. I am currently at Jeddah airport along with thousands of other passengers. May Allah guide us safely back home. Your prayers are appreciated.”
The minister also highlighted the broader impact of regional tensions on Bangladeshi nationals abroad. “Many of our citizens and athletes are currently facing similar difficulties—from Sri Lanka to other countries. We urge everyone to remain safe and are doing everything possible to ensure they can return to Bangladesh in good health. Our best wishes are with all of them,” Aminul added.
