A gentle morning sun bathed Sydney’s Jubilee Stadium as the Bangladesh women’s football team went through their training session, charged with determination and focus. Ahead of them stands a formidable opponent: nine-time Asian champions China, a team whose pedigree and experience make them a mountainous challenge.
The red-and-green representatives of Bangladesh are set to face their first match of the Asian Cup final stage on Tuesday at Sydney’s Western Stadium. According to the team’s goalkeeper coach, Masud Ahmed, performing well on this stage could open doors to the global football arena for the players.
Speaking to the media after training, Masud stated, “There is no fear. The girls are motivated and fully aware that this is their moment to prove themselves. Performing well on Asia’s stage can unlock many opportunities internationally. The team is approaching everything positively and is not under pressure, which is very encouraging for us.”
While Bangladesh may lag behind China and North Korea in terms of strength, past success, and experience—making even a draw a remarkable result—Masud is untroubled by China’s reputation. “In a tournament like this, there is no distinction between big and small teams. We focus on technical aspects and fundamentals. If the girls execute these properly, the chance of mistakes reduces, which in turn lowers the risk of conceding goals. What we have trained throughout the year will now be applied on the field,” he explained.
Bangladesh’s management is well aware of the challenge posed by China’s attacking prowess. However, the coaching staff has been proactive. Masud elaborated, “Since qualifying for the final stage and learning the groupings, we have been analysing China, North Korea, and Uzbekistan. Every match is studied, with emphasis on identifying strengths and weaknesses. Even in today’s session, we ensured every player understood their responsibilities. Correct execution minimizes errors and protects against major setbacks.”
Goalkeepers will face the sternest test, with Rupna Chakma as the primary custodian. Other players must assist in defending long-range shots. Masud added, “We have been practising long-range shots extensively. Since the group draw, we have observed how China targets and finishes from various angles. The preparation has been thorough, and I don’t anticipate major issues with long-range attempts.”
Bangladesh has twice won the South Asian Football Federation Championship, the region’s premier tournament. Whether they can defy odds against nine-time champions China remains uncertain. Masud reflected, “Predicting what these players will achieve is very difficult. From my observation, they are extremely positive and fearless during training sessions.”
He continued, “Facing China presents a significant challenge but also a major opportunity. Encountering difficulties here will provide valuable experience for the future. The team is responding positively, and I am confident they will embrace the challenge.”
