The Election Commission of India has published the final voter list for West Bengal following an extensive revision under the Systematic Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The updated list has removed 63,66,952 names from the electoral rolls, while 60,06,675 names remain under consideration due to various data discrepancies. These names will be included gradually after hearings and verification of voter eligibility, though it is not yet clear how many of them will ultimately qualify.

West Bengal’s voter database, originally comprising 7,66,37,529 electors, underwent detailed scrutiny by the Election Commission. The first draft of the voter list, released on 16 December, included 7,08,16,630 names, with 58,20,899 names excluded at that stage. The final voter list now shows a total of 7,04,59,284 voters, including the 60,06,675 electors under verification. Questions remain about how many of these will successfully complete the verification process.

Manoj Agarwal, the State Election Officer in Kolkata, confirmed the final figures, stating that at least 63,66,952 names were removed from the final list. Of these, 60,06,675 remain under consideration due to technical or documentation errors. Eligible voters from this group will be added in phases once verification is complete. The final list also identifies 1,88,707 new voters across the state.

A constituency-level review shows notable changes in high-profile areas. In Bhowanipur, the constituency of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, 44,000 names were removed from the draft list, with a further 2,342 excluded in the final version, leaving 1,59,201 voters. Meanwhile, her principal opponent, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, sees his voter base increase from 2,67,608 to 2,68,378, with 14,184 voters under consideration.

Across the state, of the 60,06,675 voters under verification, 24,09,613 belong to the minority Muslim community, concentrated primarily in Malda, Murshidabad, and Uttar Dinajpur districts. Last Wednesday, Chief Minister Banerjee raised concerns at a rally in Bhowanipur, claiming that the SIR process could potentially remove the names of up to 1.2 crore voters in the state.

The scale of these deletions and pending verifications has created unease within the ruling party. West Bengal’s 294-seat legislative assembly election is scheduled to take place in April, making the voter list revisions a critical factor in the political landscape.
