Teacher Apprehended While Attempting Seven Lakh Bribe

Published: 17 Feb 2026, 05:52 am

In a dramatic turn of events at the Rangpur Education Complex, a school teacher was detained on Monday, 16 February 2026, after allegedly attempting to bribe a high-ranking official with 700,000 BDT (7 lakh). The incident has sent shockwaves through the regional academic community, highlighting the desperate and illicit measures sometimes taken to secure government payroll benefits.

The suspect, identified as Maidul Islam, is a teacher at Kazaikata High School in the Roumari Upazila of Kurigram. According to official reports, the attempted bribery took place within the office of the Deputy Director of Secondary and Higher Education for the Rangpur Region.

The "Cash in a Bag" Confrontation

According to Roksana Begum, the Deputy Director of the Rangpur regional office, Maidul Islam entered her private chamber during the afternoon. When questioned regarding the purpose of his visit, the teacher produced a mobile phone message concerning the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) enlistment of staff at his school.

The MPO system is the mechanism through which the Bangladeshi government provides salary subsidies to teachers of non-government educational institutions. Maidul Islam reportedly claimed he had brought 7 lakh BDT to ensure the necessary approvals for his colleagues' enlistment.

"He repeatedly gestured toward a bag in his possession, insisting it contained 7 lakh BDT," Deputy Director Roksana Begum stated. "He pleaded with me to accept the money and facilitate the administrative process for his school."

Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Deputy Director immediately summoned her staff and ordered them to restrain the teacher. She subsequently alerted the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC Intervention and Detention

Following the report, a team led by Shaon Mia, the Deputy Director of the Integrated ACC Office in Rangpur, arrived at the scene. Upon searching the suspect’s belongings in the presence of witnesses, the illicit cash was recovered.

Criminal Implications

The ACC has confirmed that Maidul Islam admitted to bringing the funds specifically for bribery purposes. Under the Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant sections of the Penal Code, such actions carry significant custodial sentences. Shaon Mia confirmed that the agency is currently preparing a formal case against the educator.

This incident underscores the ongoing battle against administrative corruption within the education sector. While the MPO process is intended to support educators, the complexity of enlistment often creates opportunities for middlemen or desperate staff to engage in criminal conduct.
